Ask for the assessment, not the therapy
No provider can quote hours before a BCBA has assessed your child. Booking that assessment is what starts the clock, and it is what the waiting list is actually for.
Apply to several providers at once
Waits in Essex County vary by town and by plan. Families who apply to three or four start months sooner than families who wait on one.

NJ FamilyCare
New Jersey covers medically necessary ABA for a child with an autism diagnosis. From age 3 the route in is PerformCare. Managed care runs through Horizon NJ Health, Wellpoint, Aetna Better Health and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan.
Commercial plans
New Jersey's autism insurance mandate requires state-regulated plans to cover behavioral therapy. Self-funded employer plans sit outside state law and set their own terms, so ask your HR team which type you have. It is one question and it changes what you are entitled to.
Paying privately
Some families self-fund a focused program or parent training while an authorization is pending. Ask providers what a reduced-hour start looks like rather than assuming it is full time or nothing.

How many ABA providers are there in Essex County?
The federal NPPES registry lists 79 behavior analysis providers with a practice address in Essex County, across 19 of its 22 municipalities. The largest concentrations are in Newark (10), Bloomfield (7), Livingston (7). Many serve a wider radius than their registered address suggests, and in-home teams routinely cross town lines.
How long is the wait, and what actually shortens it?
It varies by plan and by how far you can travel. The one thing families control is how many providers they apply to. Applying to one and waiting is the slowest route; applying to several in parallel is the fastest. Accepting fewer hours to start is the second biggest lever.
Does my child need a diagnosis before starting?
For funded ABA, yes. Insurers and NJ FamilyCare authorize against a written autism diagnosis. Early Intervention will evaluate a child under 3 without one.
